Measure with a soft tape over the head shape your wig will sit on: if you will wear it over flat-braided or short hair, measure over that. Full technique with photos is in the measuring guide.

Sizes vary between brands; treat this as your starting size and confirm at a local fitting.

How wig sizes actually work

Most brands cut caps in petite (about 20.5 inches), average (about 22 inches), and large (about 23.5 inches), with two-way adjustable straps adding roughly half an inch of range either way. Between-size heads are normal and solvable: straps, wig grips, and shop alterations cover the gaps. Cap depth and width matter as much as circumference for comfort, which is why the optional measurements are worth taking. If the numbers put you at a boundary, a local shop fitting settles it in ten minutes, and the fitting checklist tells you what else to test while you are there.
